Critical Interpretations in Shakespearean Tragedy: The Perception of Insanity in the Character Hamlet in the Play The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare
In this paper we can argue for a greater logic in modern critical thought on Shakespeares character Hamlet, to help us learn why Hamlet was not faking his insanity. The development of psychology in the twentieth century helped to shape modern views on Hamlets actions and behaviors, and only elucidate why they ended so tragically. In this manner, Hamlet shows more signs of clinical madness and insanity, rather than the overly optimistic and determinist views that help him appear as if he was using insanity as a disguise.
